My LFS environment at the end of ch 6 is less than 700MB.  Are you
including /tools and /sources?  If so you can archive these separately
(I did at the end of ch 5 as indicated in book because /tools changes
in ch 6).

I made archives of my progress on the host system rather than CD.
# backup LFS work in progress
"tar --create --xz
--exclude=./{dev,proc,tmp,sys,usr/src/{*.?z*,*.log,*.err},tools,sources,.Trash*}
--file /opt/lfs/lfs-system-6.8.n.n.tar.xz ."

xz creates the smallest archive for me around 75MB ( I do not include
tools/sources as I backed them up at the end of ch 5)

you could use this to create a CD.
