Well, what device do you use? :)

A short check list, produced of the top of my mind:
1. is the driver for the device available to the kernel (did you build
   it?)
2. does the device require firmware?
2a. if so, is the (correct) firmware available to the driver?
3. is the correct WiFi interface enabled in the kernel
   (Explanation: there is the older "Wireless extensions" and the newer
   nl80211 system. Some device drivers use one to do their
   thing and communicate with userland and some device drivers use the
   other.)
4. does the userland program (wpa_supplicant) have the correct drivers
   for the device (meaning wext or nl80211) compiled in?
