Just as with the SCSI controller you probably have not loaded the needed
drivers to be able use the virtual NIC provided by WMware Workstation.
If you boot your mainstream distribution inside VMware you can execute
'lspci' to analyse what (virtual) hardware your kernel will find when
booted inside this VM.
The SCSI driver is show like this:
00:10.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X
Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI (rev 01)
Now you already know how to compile this driver into the kernel.
With the network, this is the controller you kernel will see:
02:01.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet
Controller (Copper) (rev 01)
For this (virtual) NIC you will need to compile the kernel with these
options:
Device drivers -->
[*] Network device support --->
[*] Ethernet driver suppport --->
[*] Intel devices --->
[*] Intel(R) PRO/1000 Gigabit Ethernet support
Compile and reboot to test the network.
Regards.
ALZ.
PS: You will face the same problem with audio drivers. This is a hint to
find the right drivers for yourself. From 'lspci' command:
02:02.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] (rev 02)
