But if the kernel panicked while trying to load the root filesystem, doesn't 
that indicate that either the SATA/PATA driver or the ext4 driver wasn't 
compiled in? Debian's kernel is designed to work with an initrd so they compile 
these things as modules. When I've had this problem in the past, the first 
thing I always did was to check that I had answered "Y" and not "M" on those 
two options.
