That's right. Assuming SATA, one of these should be set:
# SATA SFF controllers with BMDMA
CONFIG_ATA_PIIX=y
# CONFIG_SATA_MV is not set
# CONFIG_SATA_NV is not set
# CONFIG_SATA_PROMISE is not set
# CONFIG_SATA_SIL is not set
# CONFIG_SATA_SIS is not set
# CONFIG_SATA_SVW is not set
# CONFIG_SATA_ULI is not set
# CONFIG_SATA_VIA is not set
# CONFIG_SATA_VITESSE is not set

How do I tell what kind of controller I have? (ata, sta,pta.....)

lspci |grep SATA

  File systems
#
CONFIG_DCACHE_WORD_ACCESS=y
# CONFIG_EXT2_FS is not set
CONFIG_EXT3_FS=y
# CONFIG_EXT3_DEFAULTS_TO_ORDERED is not set
CONFIG_EXT3_FS_XATTR=y
CONFIG_EXT3_FS_POSIX_ACL=y
CONFIG_EXT3_FS_SECURITY=y
CONFIG_EXT4_FS=y
CONFIG_EXT4_USE_FOR_EXT23=y
# CONFIG_EXT4_FS_POSIX_ACL is not set
# CONFIG_EXT4_FS_SECURITY is not set
# CONFIG_EXT4_DEBUG is not set

Why have you 4 of 5 ext3 options set but only 3 of five ext4?

Haven't needed the others. Probably should have CONFIG_EXT4_FS_POSIX_ACL
and CONFIG_EXT4_FS_SECURITY for consistency.
