I generally use --target, lest there be any confusion where the code
will finally run.  I find the three-way cross-compiling confusing.
Perhaps target defaults to host if it's not given, not sure.

But many makefiles do CFLAGS=, which overrides the user. 8-(
In BLFS I've had to run seds on several makefiles.  The book I got
on the autotools says CFLAGS is _supposed_ to be a user variable.

Oooh, I like that one.  I don't know whether it will work for
configure.  I can try it.

Thanks Pierre, I hadn't run into one myself.  I'd like one method 
that can be consistent, and not create its own confusions.  I still
have to get a good make on gcc shortly! ;-)
