If your aim is learning about building Linux from scratch, as LFS does,
there's nothing wrong with building 6.6, in my opinion.
So you're building on a 64-bit CPU? LFS instructions and setup
requirements are much more focused on 32-bit architectures. Another
thing that may cause some difficulty is beginning with a Debian-based
host system, say as compared to a RedHat-derived system. The two have
gone in quite different directions for many years. LFS is perhaps a
little closer to RedHat derivations. Configure is telling you your host
isn't providing the GNU tools it wants.
Debian 64-bit systems are quite appropriate for LFS. You just have to
make sure that the host system requirements (section vii of the Preface)
are met. We went away from the focus on 32-bit architectures several
years ago. We tend to focus more on 64-bit systems today but still
support 32-bit systems.
