I looked in the files config.log and the words 'private' and 'header' and
'error' do not occur in it. Am I inspecting the proper file? I'm looking in:
expect5.45/config.log

I think, I have the same problem. But i can acctually find "error", "header"
and "private" i my file.
Am I guessing right, that you're using "less" to read the log file? I think
you typed
less config.log
and then in the less-mode /error (to search for the word). If you did that,
you have to press 'n' to show the first error (n for next) If you find it,
this might help you:
You havn't done, what the book said, you were to lazy. (I did the same)
Do like
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/stable/chapter04/settingenvironment.html
says, and untar all files in your source folder.
That page does not say to "untar all files"; in fact it says nothing
about untarring at all. Plus, "untar all files" sounds like you're
saying to unpack everything at once, and the book definitely never
suggests that.
And, if Expect says it can't find Tcl's private include files, that
usually just means you haven't run "make install-private-headers" while
installing Tcl, so verify your command history.
