I've just noticed that version 7.8 of the book says:

GCC-4.1.2 including the C++ compiler, g++ (Versions greater than 5.2.0 are not recommended as they have not been tested)

My box happens to have 5.2.1

gcc (Ubuntu 5.2.1-22ubuntu2) 5.2.1 20151010

Has anybody had any success installing with this version of gcc?

At the time that book was written, 5.2.0 was current. We've checked with 5.3.0 (the latest) and that is OK.

Upstream gcc versions follow the sequence 5.1.0, 5.2.0, 5.3.0, ..., 6.1.0, etc. Distros change the last digit when they change their set of patches. So, basically 5.2.1 is a patched 5.2.0, not a version greater than 5.2.0. I am not sure whether the book should reflect that...
