Yes, but IMO it's unnecessary and undesireable because it takes one away
from the knowing what's in the bootscripts--which is reasonably
important.  I know these files are ubiquitous, but it creates "distance"
from the actual configuration.  (As inittab took me away from the agetty
configuration parameter.)  They are useful up to a point, and where that
is, YMMV.  I decided not to use rc.site in my init rewrite.

The latter.  They were there because it is reasonably important status,
and suddenly POOF!
