Let me try to rephrase it : your source packages are a series of
tarballs.  Most of them will create a directory when you extract
them.  But for this tarball the book does NOT do it on its own -
it is dealt with as part of glibc.

For *every* package: extract it when the book tells you, remove the
extracted files at the end of the page (but keep the source tarball)
and work your way through the book, one package at a time.  If ever
a package fails to compile, stop and ask for advice.
