No, that is right. I don't mean to be rude or insensitive--I still
remember being a relative newbie to *nix looking up at "mountain" I
wanted to climb. The thing is, doing a Linux/GNU system from scratch
isn't a job for newbies. I played around with a RHL-6.1 Publisher's
Edition for a year "to get myself in shape for the climb." There is a
certain level of experience to be expected--after all, we're playing
down in the guts of the system! "Stuff happens!" It's not unreasonable
for the book to expect the "user" to know mount, and others, are
priveleged commands. sudo isn't required! IMO, if one expects to
install LFS, one should be able to use the root account, and do so
safely. I've never installed sudo on any of my systems.
That prompts me to have another go at something I was going to say
yesterday (I decided not to because the overall tone of my post
seemed too negative, and at that time nobody else had replied).
Our build method basically pre-dates the mass-market offering of
distros without a root account (to me, ubuntu started that) -
nothing wrong with doing that, but it *does* make things harder for
people who use the system to bootstrap a new system. And I agree
that having the root account makes it easy to trash a system - good
backups (and the ability to restore from them if the installed
systems can no longer do that, e.g. with some Live CDs) definitely
help.
Oh, and I do use sudo on desktops (with xbindkeys, to allow me to
suspend to RAM from the keyboard). But we all have different
use-cases.

Yes I am using Ubuntu like millions of people. I can't believe I am the
very first one who have wondered about it while reading LFS.
