Looking at https://github.com/jakeday/linux-surface/pull/238
via later links suggests that ubuntu stopped including the fallback
mechanism for booting unsigned kernels *if secure boot is enabled*.
In which case, disabling secure boot is the solution. Of course, if
you are also using windows on the machine then you can't do that.
