Ah! I'll read ahead (which I tried very hard to avoid) in that case. I've
heard that the kernel gurus are adding (native?) support for larger fonts
due to the prevalence of HiDPI screens.

Are you rebuilding the kernel on your target system?  The only thing

Yes, sorry if I wasn't clear... I copied everything off the USB drive and
onto the new system, and rebuilt the kernel from there. I'll retry my
kernel build again and triple-check all the menuconfig settings to make
sure they're sane.

Is there anything earlier I need to redo? I don't need to rebuild any parts
of the toolchain steps for a new system?

(To be fair, it took me five tries to get a bootable system, so I'll
rebuild LFS from scratch on the secondary computer if it's something I
can't fix by rebuilding the kernel a few times.)
