For some reason I haven't yet received xry211's post, but I'll
reinforce the nvidia comment: all current nvidia cards suck on
desktop linux (recent ones have firmware problems which prevent
nouveau using them at other than default settings, and anyway they
are expensive).

For AMD, I'm writing this from a Ryzen 5 3400 APU (with Picasso
integrated graphics) which despite being introduced this year as
part of the 3000-series is Zen+ not Zen2. The mobo bundle came with
16GB DDR4-2400 which is slower than it need be, but gives me an SBU
of 104 seconds when retesting the SBU time after booting. The big
gains on Ryzens come when using all cores for compiling.

But probably more important than the processor is the amount of RAM.
This one only has 13.6GB total after deducting the graphics and
other unusable addresses, but that is adequate to run make -j8 on
everything I've tried to build. Conversely, my laptop (2500U Zen)
shipped with 8GB, of which a large chunk is similarly unavailable,
and that is not enough to use all cores for building (it swaps in
firefox or qtwebengine). So, for 4 core machines 8GB _available_ RAM
is a good idea (i.e. 8GB and if possible reduce how much is used for
the graphics).

One more thing re Zen - as of today, ATI integrated graphics still
need root access.
