Thanks, but I don't have /etc/vimrc at this point (I've only got as
far as testing vim). And then I had a different thought - when I
enter chroot I pass TERM=xterm-color so that after vim has been
installed I can sort-of use it in chroot from my normal rxvt-unicode
terms. But in my ttys TERM is linux.

Sorry for the noise, I think I've been out of the main LFS
development for too long - and often I have to sound off and then
step away before I get better ideas.
I'll update my build to 8.2.0716 - svn tells me that crept in during
r11840 although I didn't spot it because there were no changes to
the commands and it didn't show up in the changelog.
