I just believe my suggestion is a good compromise between platform support vs. longterm maintainability (i.e. fewer ifdefs). Even if we did find a better solution for nasm 2.08, we would have to keep the ifdefs for AVX. I'll ask the Cygwin folks if/when they are going to upgrade nasm.
