I think you have some problem during the configuration step, a simple
configure --enable-libmp3lame should enable both the libmp3lame
encoder and decoder (did you make distclean before to configure?),
check the -formats option and te configure output.

Also you should use a more recent version of ffmpeg, and this kind of
ff* tool question belongs more properly to ffmpeg-user rather than to
libav-user.

BTW why so many newlines in your message? They make its readability

Thanks very much.  Yes that was my first post and Outlook added the extra
lines.  I've already been asked to move it to ffmpeg-user so I will do that.
I still don't understand "where" to run that command, and what *exact*
command to run, but thanks all the same - I'll ask it in the other group.
