Yes, this is possible. However, the current TS muxer has some issues, and
some hardware players might dislike the generated transport streams.

If I remember correctly, there is a new TS muxer being developed, which
should fix these issues.

I do not think this is required. However, some standards might require
some particular encapsulation (I think I've seen some "LATM" - wathever it
is - AAC audio in some DVB-S streams).
