Thanks for the useful additions. I have committed your code with a number of changes. Some I feel more strongly about than others which are more a matter of style.
We should probably discuss off list since I don't think others will be much interested. There were no tests included and I didn't add any. So it is likely that I broke things. Some sort of tests need to be added. Also important to note is that the mmc source code is getting reorganized hopefully to be able to accommodate the growth and changes that have been occurring.
