I can point out that cables communication [1] is designed to withstand most of the threats discussed in this thread. For instance, it works over Tor, and I doubt that Mexican drug cartels have access to this network's global traffic analysis system, if such exists. But I am skeptical wrt. ability of activists and journalists to rationally assess the vulnerability of communication methods that they use, even when provided with necessary information.
