During World War II, the Kamikaze era ushered in a wave of Japanese willing to sacrifice themselves for the cause. Then, in the early 1980s, the suicide bomber emerged in Beirut. Today, hardly a day goes by when you don't hear about a suicide bomber blowing himself or herself up along with the innocents within the blast's deadly zone. Even today, reports say a suicide bomber killed at least 20 and wounded another 25 when he blew himself up among Iraqi army volunteers in a northern town near the Syrian border. Iraq's al Qaeda claimed responsibility. But what we are also witnessing is the growing use of this technique beyond the conventional war zones such as Iraq and the Middle East. So, who are these people willing to sacrifice themselves in the name of a cause? Not necessarily whom you might think. The experts tell us the suicide bomber isn't part of the kooky fringe and in many cases, they're not that different from you or me. Their aim, say the folks who've studied the mind of the suicide bomber, is not to kill innocents for the sake of the innocents. But this is the only way they see to achieve their larger goal. "Nightline" correspondent John Donvan takes us inside the mind of the suicide bomber. We'll also report on the fallout from last night's explosive interview with Chechen terrorist Shamil Basayev.
