It is what might be called the "police power" that is the problem with government. If there were no police power--that is, no enforcement--there would be no taxation (or at least, none that was not truly voluntary, in which case it would probably best called something else). And while individual tax bills may have gone done, overall police power has climbed under both Democrats and Republicans. And individual tax bills may not have gone down. At best, under the RP management, only the federal portion has gone down. I pay more in non federal taxes--sales tax, property tax, non ad-valorem taxes--now than I did before GWBush was in office, and the increase is far greater than the relatively small decrease in my federal income tax. Financially, I'm worse off overall now than I was in 2000, and while not all the blame for that goes to the Bush administration, some of it, such as the negative effects of the war on Iraq, has to be laid on the Oval Office. And some of the rest, which resulted directly from actions and policies of the fairly large corporation for which I work, could spin into the question of how far corporate elites are tangled in the web of government to the detriment of the general public. But it is the police power--which the Republican Party has always tried to increase, going all the way back to Fort Sumter--which is the core of the problem, and GWBush seems to be a big fan of police power.
