True, wealth is created on the ground, in the marketplace as people interact and apply their skills. But look at several third world countries where very small numbers of people control all access to capital, that is not a true free market. Besides if my ancestors could march into your city, seize your family's land and prpoerty then declare 3 generations later that it is all due to the free market and you are poor because you are lazy, ignorant, have bad culture or whatever. That is not the result of free market forces in the market place. Fluctuations in ownership are inevitable. High concentrations of wealth, I believe, history will show are due to me getting my hands on those who set the rules so that heads I win, tails you lose. All the more reason to limit government. (That is how we sell libertarianism, by the way, as you astutely point out, I have just advocated a libertarian-oriented solution using liberal arguments.) Greg
