I think you are mischaracterizing a long held system.  In most of the world,
having a large family contributes to your financial well being.  More help
working the fields produces higher yields, more children and grandchildren
to support you in your old age (50??).

These trends almost always reverse themselves on their own when economies
improve.  America had large families early on.  But increased wealth stopped
this.  Even to a certain extent with Mormons and Catholics.

If you really believe the world can't support more people, look down at the
ground next time you are on a plane.  There are HUGE areas of land that is
totally unused.  Even in the northeast of the US.

What is usually characterized as over population is almost always a caste
system (in India) that prevents land ownership by much of the population.
In China, land ownership was totally forbidden and is now available only to
large corporations.
