Senate Judiciary members who support the federal anti-hate bill S.1145
outnumber opponents by at least 12 to 10. Two Republicans, Senator Arlen
Specter (R., Pennsylvania) and Mike DeWine (R., Ohio), have declared their
support for the bill.
Unless there is a miracle of Divine intervention or a senatorial change of
mind, S.1145 will soon be on the floor of the Senate, voted upon by a Senate
overwhelmingly inclined to pass it quickly. Such passage already occurred on
June 15, 2004, with a vote of 65 to 33, although it was later overturned in
conference.
It is imperative that all who love freedom call each of the 55 Republican
members of the Senate toll free at 1-888-355-3588 or toll at 1-202-225-3121.
The list of Senate Republicans is posted on the home page of
www.truthtellers.org. Download this list and call, stating this simple message:
I want to express my disapproval of the hate bill S.1145. Dont hang up but

called on Palestinian authorities to immediately remove an Arabic
translation of the entire "Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion" from
their official State Information Service Web site.
ADL's Israel Office issued the following statement:
The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion is the classic in racist
and paranoid literature and has been heralded by anti-Semites around the
world as proof that the Jews are plotting to take over the world. While The
Protocols have been thoroughly discredited the document is still being used
to stir up anti-Semitic hatred especially throughout the Arab world.
(The Protocols are REAL and every one is in effect. This alone proves it is a
CONSPIRACY FACT, NOT THEORY!
They have NOT been 'discredited' merely PROPAGANDIZED against in ZIONIST
controlled media!))
It is simply unacceptable particularly at this time of confidence
building toward a better future between Israelis and Palestinians for the

presently support the Zionist backed 'hate crime' legislation do so
knowingly, willfully, fully cognizant of their unconstitutional act of evil.
They can labeled no other way, for it is an insult to the intelligence of
every citizen to suggest that these men and women in national legislature
are being "fooled" by crafty Zionists. No, they ARE Zionists, and they know

CHERTOFF'S SWEETHEART DEAL FOR ISRAELI-OWNED
CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, through a hastily
arranged deal with Carnival Cruise Lines, $236 million from U.S. taxpayers
will flow to a tax exempt Israeli-founded corporation registered in Panama.
Before federal assistance even reached the victims of Hurricane
Katrina, Carnival Cruise Lines had received a profitable deal to provide
three ships to house evacuees from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.
The deal, reached on Sept. 2, 2005, will pay Carnival some $236
million for the use of 7,100 berths for six months. This means that each
berth will cost U.S. taxpayers $5,540 per month, or more than $184 per
night. The cost per bed can actually be much higher because not all berths
will be occupied for the entire 6-month period of the contract.
USA Today reported that "most evacuees rejected the offer" to
stay on the Carnival ships, which are reportedly being used to house city
employees from New Orleans and emergency workers involved in the cleanup
effort.
The deal, arranged by the Military Sealift Command of the U.S.
Navy at the direction of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has
raised questions in Congress about excessive profiteering by Carnival Corp.,
the parent corporation that owns Carnival Cruise Lines along with 11 other
leading cruise brands, including: Cunard Line, P&O Cruises, Princess, and
Holland America Line. Carnival Corp. operates a fleet of 79 ships.
Navy Capt. Joseph Manna negotiated the contract with Carnival.
Manna defended the deal, saying it was comparable to the cost of "a hotel
and three meals a day."
Critics in Congress, however, said the cost of the deal with
Carnival was exorbitant. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) said the cost per berth
is more than $1,275 a week, while a 7-day Caribbean cruise costs about $600
per person. "A short-term temporary solution has turned into a long-term,
grossly overpriced sweetheart deal for a cruise line," Coburn said.
Representatives Marilyn Musgrave (R-Colo.), Jeff Flake
(R-Ariz.), and Todd Tiahart (R-Kan.) sent a letter to House Speaker Dennis
Hastert (R-Ill.) calling for "an immediate investigation into all matters
related to the contract."
(Yeah, we see how well those so-called 'investigations' do eh?)
Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.) sent a letter to Homeland
Security Secretary Michael Chertoff requesting a copy of the contract and
supporting documentation for its cost on Sept. 23.
The contract with Carnival includes $44 million for operating
costs and an unknown amount to compensate for corporate taxes that could
amount to tens of millions of dollars. The federal department headed by
Chertoff agreed to compensate Carnival for its corporate taxes because,
while the company is headquartered in Miami, Florida, it is exempt from U.S.
income taxes and other taxes because it is registered in Panama and its ship
fly under foreign flags.
Carnival Corp. reported net income of $1.904 billion the
nine-month period ending August 31, 2005, but only paid $43 million in
income taxes from its pre-tax income of $1.947, a tax rate of 2.2 percent.
The state or nation to which the taxes were paid was not specified.
Carnival had announced expected losses in early September from
long-term disruption of its cruise service from New Orleans and Mobile. Two
Carnival ships, the Conquest and Sensation, were based in New Orleans prior
to Katrina. Sensation and Ecstasy are now contracted to remain in New
Orleans, while the Holiday, based in Mobile, is contracted with FEMA to
remain in its homeport.
"What we asked for was to be kept whole, basically," Micky
Arison, chief executive of Carnival Corp. said. "And to make up for the
revenue that we would have made had the ships been operated, and to pay for
the expense of canceling 100,000 people and protecting travel agent
commissions."
Carnival Corp. was started by the Ted Arison, an Israeli veteran
of the 1948 war in Palestine, who came to the United States in the early
1950s, as did Michael Chertoff's mother, Livia Eisen. In 1990, Arison
returned to Israel and turned control of Carnival Corp. over to his son,
Micky.

Gazans barred from al-Aqsa mosque

Israel has barred Palestinians under the age of 45 and those travelling from
Gaza to pray at the Haram-al-Sharif (Noble sanctuary) in al-Aqsa mosque in
Jerusalem.
No Gazans have been allowed to reach the al-Aqsa mosque for "security reasons",
the Israeli authorities said.
As many as a hundred thousand Palestinian Muslims converged on Jerusalem's
al-Aqsa mosque on Friday for the traditional Juma'a (Friday) congregational
prayers.
Many of the worshippers came by buses and cars from the sizeable Islamic
community in Israel's proper and East Jerusalem. Muslims make up around
one-fifth of Israel's estimated 7-million population.
However, for thousands of West Bank Palestinians, the Israeli decision means
al-Aqsa will remain off limits to them.
Third holiest site
Al-Aqsa mosque, which Jews refer to as the Temple Mount, is considered the third
holiest Islamic place, directly after the Sacred mosque in Makka and the
Prophet's mosque in Madina.
According to tradition, the reward for a single prayer at al-Aqsa is multiplied
500 times.
"I came from Nablus to pray at the Haram-al-Sharif of Jerusalem, but the Israeli
police wouldn't allow me to pass," said Haitham Yusuf, a college student living
in a small village outside Nablus.
"It is unfair. In this age of religious freedom and tolerance, Muslims are
denied access to their religious sites. Just imagine how the reactions of Jews
would be if Jews were to be denied access to their places of worship in New York
or London or Rome.
"There is no such thing as true religious freedom in Israel. We are after all
under Israel's military occupation. Occupation and freedom are incompatible," he
said.
Security considerations
An Israeli police spokesman told Aljazeera.net: "If things go well, we might
allow younger Palestinians to pray at the mosques next Friday."
He said the restrictions were solely motivated by "security considerations". ...

Prison Service troops disguised as Arabs incited Palestinian youths to throwing
stones at Israel Defense Forces troops during a weekly demonstration against the
separation fence in the West Bank village of Bil'in, village residents said on
Friday.
The residents said that the disguised troops told the youths to throw the stones
and then joined them in doing so. When they were asked their identity, they
presented themselves as Arabs from Lod, a city in central Israel, who arrived
with the Israeli and foreign demonstrators.
When the troops, members of the Prison Service special unit Masada, did not heed
a request to show identification and were found to be in the possession of
firearms, their identities were reportedly exposed. IDF soldiers came to the
scene and dispersed them.
A few months ago, the same unit was accused of similar activities in a Bil'in
demonstration, after which a military court judge ruled that the unit lacks the
authority to operate in the Palestinian territories. It is unclear whether the
unit received special permission to operate in this case.
An IDF spokesman rejected the claim that the undercover troops incited the
youths, saying they joined them after stones were already being thrown. However,
the spokesman also acknowledged that no Palestinian demonstrators were arrested.
Anti-fence protesters, troops face off in West Bank village Around 50 Israeli,
Palestinian and foreign protesters faced off against IDF troops in Bil'in on
Friday, in what has become a long-running demonstration against the construction
of the separation fence.
According to the IDF spokesman, troops tried to act with restraint toward the
protesters, but decided to employ crowd-dispersal measures after demonstrators
began to throw stones at soldiers.
Four left-wing Israeli activists were detained for questioning, Israeli media
reports said.
The IDF has long since declared the village as a closed military zone, in light
of the repeated demonstrations held there on Fridays.
In Jerusalem, the second Friday prayers of the Muslim holy fast month of Ramadan
passed without incident, Israel Radio reported.

Dozens of Jewish worshippers attacked head of the Israel Defense Forces Manpower
Branch Major General Elazar Stern at the Western Wall plaza in Jerusalem on
Friday night.
Stern was in civilian dress when he came to pray at the Western Wall,
accompanied by his family. Worshippers surrounded him, yelling insults, and
attempted to prevent him from reaching the wall. Though police officers
immediately surrounded him, the worshippers began throwing stones and other
objects in his direction.
Stern was not hurt, and a police officer lightly wounded in the head did not
require medical treatment.
The attackers were apparently motivated by Stern's role in Israel's
disengagement from the Gaza Strip, completed last month.
Police evacuated Stern and his family and detained one suspect in the attack.
Chief of Staff Major General Dan Halutz issued a condemnation of the attack.

IDF takes on problem of suicides

With a dramatic upswing in suicides in its ranks, the general staff on Monday
approved sweeping recommendations to reduce the number one cause of death in the
IDF.
So far this year, some 30 soldiers have committed suicide, but about half of
these were in the past three months. In most cases, the IDF does not inform the
public about suicides in it ranks.
But the situation has so disturbed the IDF that on Monday the general staff held
a special forum to discuss the inquiry into military suicides and approve steps
to reduce the phenomenon.
OC Manpower Maj.-Gen. Elezar Stern reviewed each of the 30 suicide cases in
detail. He said suicide rates among IDF soldiers were similar to among
corresponding aged youth in the Western world. However, he added that it was the
army's duty to halt all taking of life.
But it was his chief staff officer, Brig.-Gen. Avi Zamir, who presented the
forum with a host of recommendations that would help identify and treat
potentially suicidal soldiers, and reduce chances they could take their own
lives.
At the current rate, a soldier kills themselves about every 10 days. The number
is larger than those killed in military operations, training accidents and
traffic accidents. According to military sources, four out of five soldiers who
committed suicide had never been in contact with a mental health officer nor
were they being treated in the civilian world. Most had been spur of the moment
and used IDF-issued weapon. "There is a direct link between carrying weapons and
suicides," head of the army's mental health department Col. Dr. Gadi Lubin was
quoted as saying in the army weekly Bamachane. "We thought it was correct to
reconsider issuing weapons during various periods of military service."
"We hope and believe that if a rifle is less available for soldiers the number
of suicides will decrease," he added.
Last week, Deputy Chief of IDF General Staff Maj.-Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky signed
orders barring recruits and some soldiers attending various courses from taking
their weapons home on leave. The move was made to prevent theft, but also to
make it more difficult for a soldier to commit suicide. ...

ADL behind ordeal with Amazon says publisher of one of Hitler's favorite authors
Bookseller and publisher of the rare book that the allies burned after World War
Two, has been banned from selling on Amazon.com because of an alleged operative
for the Anti-Defamation League.
After Michael Santomauro of ReportersNotebook.com, threatened her with a lawsuit
Ms. Allyson Rowen Taylor now confesses in a private e-mail: "I read the book
prior to owning it, I just needed a copy to show to the ADL." This is when
asked, why she wrote a distorted review of the book titled "The Riddle of the
Jew's Success" before receiving her purchase in the mail.
"I just learned that the same thing happened to The Institute for Historical
Review " says Santomauro "they no longer can sell their books on Amazon."
Mr. Santomauro is angry and is worried how he will market this title. He says
"it was selling about a 100 copies a month."
"In the Intel business" says Santomauro, "Ms.Taylor is what is known as a 'trail
watcher'. They just sit around waiting to spot any opposition movement so they
can signal their troops. Amazon.com needs to know that she is a shill...part of
a professional campaign to smear booksellers that deal with the "Jewish
Question".
As of Oct. 12, 2005 Amazon took off Ms.Taylor's review this is what she had to
say:

"The above review", says Santomauro "was written the same day she ordered the
book on Sept 10, 2005. I e-mailed her a question: "Why did you write such a
nasty review, if you never read the book?" She was scared that I would not
process her order, I assured otherwise and sent her the book. There is a clause
in Amazon's contract not to correspond with customers outside of the transaction
matter. She was the only person from my Amazon customer list that I put on the
Reporter's Notebook e-mail list."
When asked why? Santomauro says "she claimed that she used to get my daily
e-mail's and wanted to be put back on the list. Which did seem odd to me at the
time. I later checked and it is true she used to get my e-mail's, almost three
years ago! When she did get the book I sent her, she asked to be removed from
the list. Which I did on the same day of her request. This woman trapped me
three years later with the clause in Amazon's contract!"
One of his reader's of his daily newsletter that ReportersNotebook.com sends
out, had this to say in a protest letter to Amazon.com:
"Apparently one "nutso" person was upset but the rest of the people ordering the
book were very satisfied. How about opening your eyes and realize that you have
been scammed by this person trying to stop freedom of speech. I order MANY books
from Amazon.com. I could easily NOT order any more. Please allow reasonableness
to come to the table here. This person, obviously has some mental problems
dealing with criticism of anything Jewish. I am sure you carry MANY books
critical of MANY other religions."
Another subscriber, Les Blough, Editor/Publisher AxisofLogic.com on behalf of
Santomauro had this to say:
"As a long-time customer of Amazon.com with a significant purchasing history, I
am very disappointed at your decision to cancel the work of Michael Santomauro's
due to the complaint of one person (Ms. Taylor - "The Riddle of the Jew's
Success"). I do not know Mr. Santomauro personally, but I have carefully read
his work and have come to appreciate his meticulous scholarship and intellectual
integrity. Even if one gives Ms. Taylor the benefit of the doubt and accepts
that she was offended, removing the author's work from a major distributor like
Amazon seems to me to be excessive to say the least. I have never read or sensed
bigotry or racial/ethnic prejudice in any of it. I am alarmed when I see these
judgments made by Amazon or any other distributor, especially based on the word
of one person. As an editor/publisher for 11 columnists from 7 different
countries to over a half million readers, I cannot help but question your
decision to censure Mr. Santomauro's work. We are all capable of making mistakes
and I strongly urge you to reconsider your decision."

This book is simply a godsend to the historian.
It helps illuminate the Third Reich's rise to power, and the underlying beliefs
held by many in that era.
Theodor Fritsch was among those writers in Germany who held beliefs that were
popular by the National Socialists; and, perhaps for the first time ever,
readers get to see a glimpse of the thought-train that led to the National
Socialists' ascension.
The translator did an excellent job in helping the curious understand the
mindset that was perpetuated in Germany's past.
Some people--perhaps, those who are a bit overly traumatized from being exposed
to incessant propaganda relating to that time frame, living in the past instead
of the modern age--may be unduly concerned about this book.
However, there is truly no need for one to be paranoid, as any rational person
would treat this book as the intriguing historical curiosity that it is--and an
extremely illuminating one too.

THEODOR FRITSCH (1852-1934)
Called "the most influential German anti-Semite before Hitler," Fritsch's most
influential book Handbuch der Judenfrage 1896 (Handbook of the Jewish Question)
went through dozens of printings, and was taught in German schools during the
Nazi era. Most copies were destroyed after World War Two.
"Handbook" was translated into English in 1927 and titled "The Riddle of the
Jew's Success" by F. Roderich-Stoltheim, a pen name. It is extremely rare;
original copies cost as much as $1000.
Fritsch does not fit the image of hatemonger foaming at the mouth. His book
impresses me as the work a civilized man with considerable spiritual
discernment. His central point is that Judaism does not deserve credit for
monotheism because the Jewish God is not universal.
"It is a fatal mistake of our theologians to regard the Jewish God as identical
with the Christian. On a closer examination, Jehovah is found to be the
exclusive God of Jewdom and not, at the same time, that of other men."
He cites many passages from the Old Testament to demonstrate that the Covenant
between Jews and their God "bears a hostile meaning for all non-Jewish people."
As a consequence, the Talmud (which is the Jewish code of law) distinguishes one
system of morality for Jews and another for Gentiles who are regarded as cattle
or swine. Fritsch cites many references to show it is permitted to lie, cheat or
steal from a Gentile. (pp. 57-65)
Fritsch concludes that anti Semitism is a natural reaction to these hostile
attitudes which he claims are actually practiced by many Jews. Since these
beliefs are kept secret from non-Jews, he says Judaism is a conspiracy against
non-Jews. Its aim is to fulfill the Covenant, and gain dominion over mankind by
controlling wealth.
DEFENSE MECHANISM
Anti Semitism is not an irrational hatred or sickness in the Gentile soul, as
Jews imagine. It is a healthy defense mechanism of mainly Christian and Moslem
nations, cultures, races and religions that are threatened by a gradual and
insidious process of extinction.
Most "anti Semitic" books I've seen are remarkably free of hatred and rancor.
They do not advocate violence against Jews but present measures to retain
national and racial character similar to those practiced by Jews in Israel
today.
They tend to be reasonable and portray the Gentile as a feckless victim...Leon
de Poncins would even accept Jewish leadership if it were benign.
"The Jewish Question" has been a major issue for hundreds of years. As early as
1879, a German writer lamented that it cannot be discussed honestly.
"Since 1848 if we Germans so much as criticized any little thing Jewish, it was
enough to have us entirely outlawed from the press," wrote Wilhelm Marr. "While
a sense of delicacy is wholly absent among the Jews [when satirizing Germans],
it is demanded of us that we handle them like fine glassware or extremely

... Prof. MacDonald claims that one of the most consistent ways in which Jews
have advanced their interests has been to promote pluralism and diversity - but
only for others. Ever since the 19th century, they have led movements that tried
to discredit the traditional foundations of gentile society: patriotism, racial
loyalty, the Christian basis for morality, social homogeneity, and sexual
restraint. At the same time, within their own communities, and with regard to
the state of Israel, they have often supported the very institutions they attack
in gentile society. ...
Prof. MacDonald quotes a remarkable passage from Charles Silberman: "American
Jews are committed to cultural tolerance because of their belief - one firmly
rooted in history - that Jews are safe only in a society acceptant of a wide
range of attitudes and behaviors, as well as a diversity of religious and ethnic
groups. It is this belief, for example, not approval of homosexuality, that
leads an overwhelming majority of American Jews to endorse 'gay rights' and to
take a liberal stance on most other so-called 'social' issues."
He is saying, in effect, that when Jews make the diversity-is-our-strength
argument it is in support of their real goal of diluting a society's homogeneity
so that Jews will feel safe. They are couching a Jewish agenda in terms they
think gentiles will accept. Likewise, as the second part of the Silberman
quotation suggests, Jews may support deviant movements, not because they think
it is good for the country but because it is good for the Jews.
Prof. Silberman also provides an illuminating quote from a Jewish economist who
thought that republicans had more sensible economic policies but who voted for
the Democratic presidential candidate anyway. His reason? "I'd rather live in a
country governed by the faces I saw at the Democratic convention than those I
saw at the Republican convention." This man apparently distrusts white gentiles
and voted for a racially mixed party even if its economic policies were wrong.
What is good for Jews appears to come before what is good for the country.
Earl Raab, former president of heavily Jewish Brandeis University makes the
diversity argument in a slightly different way. Expressing his satisfaction with
the prediction that by the middle of the next century whites will become a
minority, he writes, "We have tipped beyond the point where a Nazi-Aryan party
will be able to prevail in this country." He is apparently prepared to displace
the people and culture of the founding stock in order to prevent the theoretical
rise of an anti-Jewish regime. Prof. Raab appears to see whites mainly as
potential Nazis, and is willing to sacrifice their culture and national
continuity in order to defuse an imagined threat to Jews. This passage takes for
granted the continued future existence of Jews as a distinct community even as
gentile whites decline in numbers and influence.
In the same passage, Prof. Raab continues by noting that, "We [Jews] have been
nourishing the American climate of opposition to bigotry for about half a
century. That climate has not yet been perfected, but the heterogeneous nature
of our population tends to make it irreversible..." - just as it tends to make
the ultimate displacement of European culture also irreversible. ...
In order to open European-derived societies to the immigration that would
transform them, it was necessary to discredit racial solidarity and commitment
to tradition. Prof. MacDonald argues that this was the basic purpose of a group
of intellectuals known as the Frankfurt School. What is properly known as the
Institute of Social Research was founded in Frankfurt, Germany, during the
Weimar period by a Jewish millionaire but was closed down by the Nazis shortly
after they took power. Most of its staff emigrated to the United States and the
institute reconstituted itself at UC Berkeley. The organization was headed by
Max Horkheimer, and its most influential members were T.W. Adorno, Erich Fromm,
and Herbert Marcuse, all of whom had strong Jewish identities. Horkheimer made
no secret of the partisan nature of the institute's activities: "Research would
be able here to transform itself directly into propaganda," he wrote. (Italics
in the original.)
Prof. MacDonald devotes many pages to an analysis of The Authoritarian
Personality, which was written by Adorno and appeared in 1950. It was part of a
series called Studies in Prejudice, produced by the Frankfurt school, which
included titles like Anti-Semitism and Emotional Disorder. The Authoritarian
Personality was particularly influential because, according to Prof. MacDonald,
the American Jewish Committee heavily funded its promotion and because Jewish
academics took up its message so enthusiastically. ...
But according to Prof. MacDonald it is precisely the kind of group loyalty,
respect for tradition, and consciousness of differences central to Jewish
identity that Horkheimer and Adorno described as mental illness in gentiles.
These writers adopted what eventually became a favorite Soviet tactic against
dissidents: Anyone whose political views were different from theirs was insane.
As Prof. MacDonald explains, the Frankfurt school never criticized or even
described Jewish group identity - only that of gentiles: "behavior that is
critical to Judaism as a successful group evolutionary strategy is
conceptualized as pathological in gentiles."
For these Jewish intellectuals, anti-Semitism was also a sign of mental illness:
They concluded that Christian self-denial and especially sexual repression
caused hatred of Jews. The Frankfurt school was enthusiastic about
psycho-analysis, according to which "Oedipal ambivalence toward the father and
anal-sadistic relations in early childhood are the anti-Semite's irrevocable
inheritance."
In addition to ridiculing patriotism and racial identity, the Frankfurt school
glorified promiscuity and Bohemian poverty. Prof. MacDonald sees the school as a
seminal influence: "Certainly many of the central attitudes of the largely
successful 1960s countercultural revolution find expression in The Authoritarian
Personality, including idealizing rebellion against parents, low-investment
sexual relationships, and scorn for upward social mobility, social status,
family pride, the Christian religion, and patriotism."
Of the interest here, however, is the movement's success in branding ancient
loyalties to nation and race as mental illnesses. Although he came later, the
French-Jewish "deconstructionist" Jacques Derrida was in the same tradition when
he wrote:
"The idea behind deconstruction is to deconstruct the workings of strong
nation-states with powerful immigration policies, to deconstruct the rhetoric of
nationalism, the politics of place, the metaphysics of native land and native
tongue... The idea is to disarm the bombs... of identity that nation-states
build to defend themselves against the stranger, against Jews and Arabs and
immigrants..." ...
It is well known that Jews have been traditionally associated with the left, and
Prof. MacDonald investigates this connection in some detail. Historically it was
understandable that Jews should support movements that advocated overthrowing
the existing order. After emancipation, Jews met resistance from gentile elites
who did not want to lose ground to competitors, and outsiders easily become
revolutionaries. However, in Prof. MacDonald's view, Jewish commitment to
leftist causes has often been motivated by the hope that communism, especially,
would be a tool for combating anti-Semitism, and by expectation that
universalist social solutions would be yet another way to dissolve gentile
loyalties that might exclude Jews. The appeal of univeralist ideologies is tied
to the implicit understanding that Jewish particularism will be exempt: "At the
extreme, acceptance of a universalist ideology by gentiles would result in
gentiles not perceiving Jews as in a different social category at all, while
nonetheless Jews would be able to maintain a strong personal identity as Jews."
Prof. MacDonald argues that Jews had specifically Jewish reasons for supporting
the Bolshevik revolution. Czarist Russia was notorious for its anti-Semitic
policies and, during its early years, the Soviet Union seemed to be the promised
land for Jews: it ended state anti-Semitism, tried to eradicate Christianity,
opened opportunities to individual Jews, and preached a "classless" society in
which Jewishness would presumably attract no negative attention. Moreover, since
Marxism taught that all conflict was economic rather than ethnic, many Jews
believed it heralded the end of anti-Semitism.
Prof. MacDonald emphasizes that although Jewish Communists preached both atheism
and the solidarity of the world's working people, they took pains to preserve a
distinct, secular Jewish identity. He reports that Lenin himself (who had one
Jewish grandparent) approved the continuation of an explicitly Jewish identity
under Communism, and in 1946 the Communist Party of the United States voted a
resolution also supporting Jewish peoplehood in Communist countries. Thus,
although Communism was supposed to be without borders or religion, Jews were
confident that it would make a place for their own group identity. He writes
that despite the official view that all men were to be brothers, "very few Jews
lost their Jewish identity during the entire soviet era."
Jewish Communists sometimes betrayed remarkable particularism. Prof. MacDonald
quotes Charles Pappoport, the French Communist leader: "The Jewish people [are]
the bearer of all the great ideas of unity and human community in history... The
disappearance of the Jewish people would signify the death of humankind, the
final transformation of man into a wild beast." This seems to attribute to Jews
an elite position incompatible with "unity and human community."
Prof. MacDonald argues that many Jews began to fall away from Communism only
after Stalin showed himself to be anti-Semitic. And just as Jews had been the
leading revolutionaries in anti-Semitic pre-Revolutionary Russia, Jews became
the leading dissidents in an anti-Semitic Soviet Union. A similar pattern can be
found in the imposed Communist governments of Eastern Europe, which were largely
dominated by Jews. The majority of the leaders of the Polish Communist Party,
for example, spoke better Yiddish than Polish, and they too maintained a strong
Jewish identity. After the fall of Communism many stopped being Polish and
emigrated to Israel.
Prof. MacDonald writes that in Bela Kun's short-lived 1919 Communist government
of Hungary, 95 percent of the leaders were Jews, and that at the time of the
1956 uprising Communism was so closely associated with Jews that the rioting had
almost the flavor of a pogrom. He argues that in the United States as well, the
hard core among Communists and members of Students for a Democratic Society
(SDS) was mainly Jewish. Here, too, a revolutionary, atheist, and universalist
world-view was fully compatible with strong identification as Jews. Prof.
MacDonald quotes from a study of American leftists:
"Many Communists, for example, state that they could never have married a spouse
who was not a leftist. When Jews were asked if they could have married Gentiles,
many hesitated, surprised by the question, and found it difficult to answer.
Upon reflection, many concluded that they had always taken marriage to someone
Jewish for granted." Their commitment as Jews was even more fundamental and
unexamined than their commitment to the left.
Prof. MacDonald reports that many American Jews also abandoned Communism as it
became increasingly anti-Semitic. For a large number, the Soviet Union's
severing of diplomatic ties with Israel during the 1967 war was the last straw.
A former SDS activist no doubt spoke for many when he explained, "If I must
choose between the Jewish cause and a 'progressive' anti-Israel SDS, I shall
choose the Jewish cause. If barricades are erected, I will fight as a Jew."
According to Prof. MacDonald, American neoconservatism can also be described as
a surface shift in external politics that leaves the more fundamental commitment
to Jewish identity unchanged. Thus, former leftists abandoned an ideology that
had turned against Israel and refashioned American conservatism into a different
movement, the one unshakable theme of which was support for Israel.
Neoconservatives also support high levels of immigration and were active in
excluding white racial identification from the "respectable" right.
... Jews have traditionally thought of themselves as a benevolent presence, even
as a "light unto the nations" or a "chosen people." This is echoed today in the
Jewish self image as champions of the excluded and the oppressed. ...
Prof. MacDonald concedes that many Jews are sincere in their support for liberal
causes, but then escalates his indictment by arguing that "the best deceivers
are those who deceive themselves."
... He agrees with Joseph Sobran, who has said "they want to be Jews among
themselves but resent being seen as Jews by Gentiles. They want to pursue their
own distinct interests while pretending that they have no such interests..."
Prof. MacDonald argues that the success of Jewish-led intellectual movements has
been possible only because their Jewish character was hidden. If
multi-culturalism or mass immigration or The Authoritarian Personality had been
promoted by Orthodox Jews in black coats the Jewish element would have been
clear. Prof. MacDonald writes that in fact, "the Jewish political agenda was not
an aspect of the theory and the theories themselves had no overt Jewish content.
Gentile intellectuals approaching these theories were therefore unlikely to view
them as aspects of Jewish-gentile cultural competition or as an aspect of a
specifically Jewish political agenda." Prof. MacDonald also claims that Jews
have often tried to conceal the Jewish character of an intellectual movement by
recruiting token gentiles for visible positions as spokesmen. He writes that
this tactic was so common in the American Communist Party that gentiles often
saw through it and resigned.
