That appears to me to be an interesting use of the phrase, "beat like a drum," especially given the opinions of people familiar with both candidates and the campaign. Here is the local newspaper's take on what you call "getting beat like a drum for his efforts." Mathias ekes out primary victory BY KIMBERLY FORNEK STAFF WRITER Sidney Mathias had to wait until the morning after the primary election to find out whether he would continue to be the Republicans' choice for state representative of the 53rd District. With 91 of 99 precincts counted, Mathias, a four-term state legislator, had a 555-vote lead over challenger Scott Bludorn as of Wednesday morning. Mathias had 3,722 votes to Bludorn's 3,167, a 54 percent majority for Mathias in the Republican primary for the 53rd District, which includes parts of Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Wheeling and Prospect Heights. "It was a nail-biter," Mathias said. "It was my closest race since my first election." That was four-way race in 1998 for the GOP nomination for state representative, which Mathias won by approximately 400 votes. The 42-year-old Bludorn, who like Mathias lives in Buffalo Grove, won the early support of some Republicans. He was endorsed in January by the Republicans of Wheeling Township. "Without that endorsement, we would have known the outcome last night," Mathias, 61, said. In the general election in November 2004, Bludorn, running as a Libertarian, received 7 percent of the votes to Mathias' 63 percent. When a candidate gets the endorsement of his party, Mathias said, "all of a sudden you have a worker in each precinct, a worker known to the people in that precinct," who can influence voters' decisions. "I think there are a lot of people that come in (to the election booth) with a sample ballot," Mathias said. "For some of the higher offices, like governor, they have made up their minds, but they may not have made up their minds for the other offices." "I knew I was going to be in the campaign of my life," Mathias said. "(Bludorn) is a great campaigner. I knew he was going to work hard. His effort, combined with the Wheeling Township endorsement, that's what made it close." Bludorn could not be reached for comment Wednesday morning. As a serving state legislator, Mathias is down in Springfield on weekdays when the General Assembly is in session, which means he can campaign at home only on the weekends. "That's a big disadvantage," Mathias said, "because people do value and support the candidates who knock on their doors." But the name recognition he has as an incumbent, combined with the legislative work he has done for his district, "made the difference," and gave him the victory, Mathias said. His challenger in the general election in November will be another Buffalo Grove resident, Michael MacDonald, who defeated Robert Sherman in Tuesday's Democratic primary. http://www.pioneerlocal.com/cgi-bin/ppo-story/localnews/ current/bg/03-23-06-870635.html --- In [email protected], "Edward J.
