The word I'm picking up from the voices that may or may not be in my head is that the Bludorn won the regular GOP vote in the primary. Rumors have it that, especially in the Lake County/Buffalo Grove precincts (where Mathias shares ethnicity with many voters, and where he was Village President years ago), *groups* of people were walking into the polling places towards the end of the day saying, "I want the ballot with Mathias" on it (as opposed to asking for a Dem or GOP ballot). Since Bludorn only lost by about 555 votes, it is very conceivable that it was these last-minute voters, not even sure of the party to which Mathias belonged, who swung the election.
This information helps put to bed the misguided notion that Bludorn's "radical" libertarian views sunk his campaign. It appears as if the GOP regulars liked and supported his uncompromising libertarian message, but Mathias's personal network, built up over decades of professional politicking, swung the election. In a few months, after the polling data has been interpreted, this rumor can be better validated. All of this is too bad for Bludorn, and for the libertarian movement in Illinois. However, from my arrogant point of view, it serves the GOP right. If they want the taxpayers to pay for their selection process (primaries), then they will suffer defeats such as this.
