It is not a secret that terrorist groups recruit U.S. citizens on U.S. soil. An example was Jose Padilla, recruited by Al Qaeda. I have discussed this with Muslim friends, who have witnessed such attempts in their mosques, and who are trying to counteract it. It seems that prime targets are persons with criminal backgrounds, who are already disaffected and disposed to be anti-U.S., although such persons also tend to be unreliable. Reports are that Al Qaeda has had success with the Maras Salvatrucha 13 gang, recruiting them to smuggle terrorists and equipment, including suitcase nukes, into the U.S. across the Mexican border. I have acquaintances who have had some social encounters with such gang members, which revealed a willingness to wreak damage to the U.S. and its people, as just another killing spree, for the fun of it. Never underestimate the dark side of human nature, the side that destroys for entertainment. There are a lot more people with such dark sides than most people would like to think, all around us. The world is not inhabited entirely by peace-loving libertarians. The Middle East provides a good lesson in human nature: most people are peaceful but so many people are not that they can create a war and involve all the others in it, despite their best efforts to oppose it.
