We disagree as to whether the forty five lost planks were poorly written.
I can't prove it but I think that the reformatting was an effort to condition
members to scrap the platform.
When you say that we can't get much clearer on any subject, remember that
we are dealing with American voters.
I hope that your optimism will prove to be correct but I remain unconvinced.
Why don't you start writing improvements. If I like them, I will support them
in 2008, God willing.

David - My take on this is far less grim ...

The actual effect of this is that some 45 or 50 poorly written planks on
specific issues (many of which still needed major massaging to fit the new
format) got scrapped. What remains though (along with a very few planks that
mostly say what we are about specifically) are the Statement of Principle, the
Preamble and the intro paragraphs for each of the four sections. (having only
Immigration under section IV is troublesome, but not irreparable).

The result is, any candidate who tries to go against the stance in those
sections is asking for trouble; and any candidate who had trouble defending
against specific plank-stances, now has to encounter the remaining text.

True, we do not have specific wording about IRS, war in Iraq, etc. However
the Foreign Policy intro says:

"American foreign policy should seek an America at peace with the world and
the defense -- against attack from abroad -- of the lives, liberty, and
property of the American people on American soil. Provision of such defense
must respect the individual rights of people everywhere.

"The principle of non-intervention should guide relationships between
governments. The United States government should return to the historic
libertarian tradition of avoiding entangling alliances, abstaining totally from
foreign quarrels and imperialist adventures, and recognizing the right to
unrestricted trade, travel, and immigration."

Can't get much clearer than that!
