The problem is that David believes that the state should enforce the terms
of the oath/promise given. It does raise a question about the military - how
can we claim that rights are inalienable and yet forcibly prevent or punish
those in the military from exercising them?

Even in the US, many women think a woman should submit to her husband. Go
  to the web -- _www.Alt.com_ (http://www.Alt.com) is a starting point --
and
you will find thousands of women begging to submit. You may question their
motives, but they are out there. If you allow sex for sale, why not
slavery
for sale? Is it morally superior for a soldier to swear an oath to be
submissive to the Commander-in-Chief than for a wife to swear submission
to her
  husband?
