Courtesy: The Better Ballot Campaign Instant runoff voting: it's one of those great ideas that begs the question: “why don’t we use it already?” IRV ensures that winners have a majority of the vote, making leadership more accountable. IRV allows voters to vote without fear of “spoiling.” When folding two elections into one, IRV means it takes less money to run, more voters pick their representatives and candidates run cleaner campaigns. IRV is on the November ballot in four cities with a combined population of more than 1.5 million people: Minneapolis (MN), Pierce County (WA), Davis (CA) and Oakland (CA). With these wins, this year's state legislative success in North Carolina and national backers like John McCain, Howard Dean and Barack Obama, we have reached a tipping point.
