Reading the article I learned that Atkinson's social tolerance shocks the
other Vermont Republicans.  The Republicans have not become any more liberal
on social issues,  and they stand aghast at Atkinson's ideas.  The GOP is no
home for social tolerance.  Atkinson explains that the Republicans were just
desperate for free-enterprise candidates. But I do wonder why the
traditional Republican lost a primary he should have easily won. Did voters
associate him with George Bush?

Here in San Francisco, the primary-winning Republicans are anti-war, and
don't want Bush anywhere near their campaigns.  His "coat-tails" are the
kiss of death.  If Republicans like ours gain a little more clout in their
party, they can clean it up and throw the guilty in jail, like they did to
Nixon and his henchmen.
