The Republicans have not become any more liberal on social issues, and they stand aghast at Atkinson's ideas. The GOP is no home for social tolerance. Atkinson explains that the Republicans were just desperate for free-enterprise candidates. But I do wonder why the traditional Republican lost a primary he should have easily won. Did voters associate him with George Bush?
Here in San Francisco, the primary-winning Republicans are anti-war, and don't want Bush anywhere near their campaigns. His "coat-tails" are the kiss of death. If Republicans like ours gain a little more clout in their party, they can clean it up and throw the guilty in jail, like they did to Nixon and his henchmen.
