Another very ominous factor was that in 1929 the American people had a much higher collective (excuse the expression, but it is accurate) level of morality and responsibility. Both those on the extreme left and right are predicting civil war within the next few decades. I disagree with you on one point. Some people will be better organized than others. Everything else being relatively equal, the better organized faction or factions will win. I hope that I do not see that time.

However, I often wonder what will happen when this country reaches economic armegedan. Unfortunately, I truly believe I will find out in my lifetime. With aging boomers starting to retire in a few years, a bankrupt social security system, $8.6 TRILLION debt and a movement to socialized medicine, the economy is headed towards collapse. Will society devolve into utter chaos like New Orleans? Will some states ( New Hampshire? ) try to break away? What would happen if we reached 25% unemployment like we did during the great depression? Remember, in 1929, the country's economy was still largely agrarian based and no one lived in public housing and received food stamps and welfare. My guess is that there would be another civil war but it wouldn't be very organized - more like a Mad Max movie of roving gangs looking for gasoline and food. There's no way that we can sustain what we've been doing. In fact, the country is doing the exact opposite of everything that it should be doing. It should be interesting.
