It has been said "Eternal Vigilance is the price of liberty," and we are urged to watch, QUESTION and hold accountable lawfully with eternal vigilance eyes those whom we entrust with power. But the remark has more signficancy when applied to ourselves. It is not from foreign aggression that our country is threatened. It is not from our rulers that we have reason to fear. It is not war or dissention that need alarm us. All these may come, but they will come in the train of something worse than all the evils they can ever bring upon us. It is ourselves whom we have reason to fear, if the shoe fits. It is the loss or the want of character, virtue and integrity in our own hearts. It is the feeling of greed, vanity, control, self-aggrandizement, ego, narcissism and pride that comes with the loss of these that threatens us with the worst of evils. An ambition whose object is inequality, whose means are divide and conquer, corruption, distortion, half-truths, faction and discord, and whose ultimate consequences are slavery. It is the silent working of wrong principles- the gradual "destruction from the inside", we will not be destroyed by a foreign enemy, tyranny arises and we will and are being destroyed from the INSIDE, the internal, that which is on the outside, assembly of COMMUN(E)ITY is but that which is on the aggregate, majority, ASSEMBLED INSIDE, the reflection of humanity's mirror, one in itself. We have an abundance of character, integrity and virtue in the abstract. We are fond of saying, when where the interests of humanity more regarded? When were all the "charities", "foundations" of life more exercised? When were the means of general education widely dispersed? When were benevolent associations of every name and character more universal? The welfare of the Republic does not rest upon these high sounding and external facts. Not at all are these sufficient for the preservation of a government like ours, for all the above exists in a socialistic/communistic despotism . Whenever humanity toils for a scanty existence, whenever the iron heel of oppression falls upon the people, whenever the last hope of Liberty is dead; remember, The battleground is in our own hearts, the enemy in our own bosoms. And when the greedy, self-serving, egotistical, prideful passions of men are subdued, when selfishness is purged from humanity, when lusts cease to burn, when anger and ignorance is entirely restrained, when jealousy, envy, artificial ego, hatred, bigotry are unknown, then, and only then, victory is won. Let no man or woman merge their identity in the masses, nor forget their individual responsibility to their country and to the Supreme Judge and Advocate of the Universe. And if in the performance of our duty, harder trials stand squarely in our face, if oppressive misrule and above the law factions should select us a victim, let us calmly serve the Truth, remembering that the best and the bravest- earth's most noblest children- have drunk the cup of degradation to the bottom dregs, and better men, than we, have been sacrificed by popular violence, oppression and tyranny, burned in fires, hung from ropes and crosses, and shot down. In whatever position we are placed, whatever our lot may be cast, let us maintain the integrity of our souls. Let us catch those exhaulting words which fell last from the lips of the dying patriot of Quincy. Let them compose the motto, the talisman ever worn next to our hearts. Let them be the first words we teach our children, and the last we utter ourselves,- "Independence for ever."
