The majority of citizens are more than competent to make political decisions.
The choices for them are disabling and restrictive in a republican form of
government where they have to elect representatives to offices instead of
making decisions directly.
The flaw in that on the national level is you cannot recall an office holder
when they go back on their promises. They make promises they cannot, and
eventually will not, keep.
An example of that is Chairwoman Pelosi. She promised her San Francisco
constituency she would impeach President Bush.
Not only did she not do that, she prevented Rep. Kucinich from doing it several
times. Her own supporters started camping out on the street in demonstrations
against her because of this.
I thought she was incredibly ignorant when she claimed she would, but she make
the promise. She not only did not attempt to pursue it, but prevented others.
If they had recall for national offices, would they elect to recall Chairwoman
Pelosi? With all the power she has for her district, perhaps a recall would
fail.
It is a moot point because you cannot recall a U.S. Representative in any case.
You have to wait until they come up for re-election. By then, President Bush
will be gone and her constituency will have other issues.
People are rendered powerless and are disenfranchised between elections. After
awhile, they tend to see the elections process as futile. If it were not so, we
would have 90% participations in every election like they do in Europe rather
than less than 50% for the average election.
The voters pick representatives, not laws. They can neither petition their
government for an initiative or expect a referendum on laws. To add to that,
you are not going to get attention by calling or writing them unless you are a
special interest or lobbyist.
If you are AFSCME, the public employee union, they are going to answer your
call. If you are AFSCME and write a paper on what should be the law, they will
change around a few words and submit it as a bill.
If you are a voter, your ability to express your consent to be governed is
restricted to five minutes every two years.
They are not "brain dead." They are politically irrelevant 729 days out of
every two years.
They do the best they can with the candidates they have. The one elected goes
to Washington, D.C. having all of their faculties.
What happens is out of the twilight zone. We know Washington, D.C. used a
European design of concentric circles. I do not know what happens there, but
all that going around in circles must create a vortex.
You know what happens to socks in the vortex of your dryer, don't you? You end
up with several half pairs. They seem to be sucked into the vortex and go into
another dimension. I buy socks that are all the same so if I lose half, I have
another half that matches.
So, it seems, when you vote a candidate into Congress, they get their brains
sucked out in Washington, D.C. Their ears grow larger and they listen less.
They talk more and do less to cause change.
Yes, that is meant to be humor, but it is a good a conspiracy story as any.
Is it any wonder there is not a recall amendment to the Constitution?
