Monopolies cannot exist without government intervention. It's mathematically 
impossible. Those corporations that you mentioned were adept at securing legal 
privileges that their competition could not.

Let's also not forget that CORPORATIONS CANNOT EXIST WITHOUT GOVERNMENTS. A 
corporation is a legal entity that is designed to shield a company's owners 
from some of the risk and personal responsibility associated with running a 
business.

Corporate law also enables mergers and acquisitions that would not otherwise 
occur, providing another avenue for monopoly creation.
