Even after the breakup of AT&T, the local phone companies were monopolies granted and regulated by government. It was not until the advent of mobile-phone technology that the phone companies broke free of government strangulation. Maybe you are too young to remember when the only mobile phones were car phones, identified by a huge funny antenna on the trunk of the car.
I don't know what you mean about Standard Oil being the only one controlling oil.
