You're right - the convention for development headers is "-devel" in
many RPM-based systems.

Yes, but before you reconfigure it, please gzip the copy of
config.log and email it to me off-list so that I can see how to turn
that error into a warning.
Afterwards, you can reconfigure with "--disable-swig".
I tried to build libhid-0.2.16 and the SVN version under CentOS 5
and both
failed when swig is enabled.
Again, I would need to see the output of config.log - there is not
enough information in that error message to diagnose the problem.
