another workaround that doesn't involve copying files is to set PYTHON_LDFLAGS to "/usr/lib/libpython2.4.so.1.0".

I started looking at a better solution, but it will have to wait for later.

Incidentally, the RPM spec file turns off SWIG support, so you should not have this problem there.
