I couldn't even get the branch to build *without* clang, once I tried
it for the first time on the Ubuntu 11.10 desktop where I've got clang
installed.

make: *** No rule to make target `getlinklibs'.  Stop.
make: *** No rule to make target `getincludedirs'.  Stop.

The effects seem to differ based on compiler, but I don't know why.
With clang it dies once parmetis fails to find mpi.h; with gcc it does
when */numerics/petsc* fails to find petsc.h.
