I tried this format (https://github.com/jwpeterson/libmesh/commits/tar_pax)
and it did force "make dist" to work on my Mac, however there were a bunch
of annoying warnings when I untar'd it on a different (Linux) machine:
libmesh-1.0.0-pre/build-aux/ltmain.sh
tar: Ignoring unknown extended header keyword `SCHILY.dev'
tar: Ignoring unknown extended header keyword `SCHILY.ino'
tar: Ignoring unknown extended header keyword `SCHILY.nlink'
So for now I think I'll stick with "ustar" and just work around the issue
by making tarballs on machines where I have a low uid.
