(I realize now, after the fact, that I'd forgotten about an
MPI_Get_count in the middle of all that; although I don't see how that

I'd still place my money on "something's wrong with that OpenMPI
installation", but "Roy misunderstood something subtle about the MPI
standard" is still in the running, so let me know if anyone ever
figures out exactly what happened.  The MPI standard does have at
least a few places where implementations are allowed-but-not-required
to punish user mistakes, which can leave users with a program that's
technically broken but works-for-me right up until it doesn't.
