This is totally irrelevant: The use case I described here was not to use
libreCMC as a "distro", but rather as a tool to build a minimal
kernel+rootfs to fit in libreboot compatible laptops flash.

With libreboot supported hardware, the "BIOS" flash sizes varies between
2M and 16M.

Since you cannot fit the rootfs of self-hosting 100% free distros(or
any of the most common GNU/Linux distributions) in the flash, you need
to either:
-> build the rootfs and the kernel by hand (tedious).
-> Use an embedded build system for that. The most well known ones are
   buildroot, openWRT, yocto.
   Yocto does not have a strong focus on achieving the smallest image
   size possible. OpenWRT does.
