I also have an Nvidia GPU but never went through the trouble of installing the drivers. So I assume it is simply "off" and does not interefere. However, if the Intel GPU is the reason for the freeze, then this could mean that anyone who runs Linux on a recently bought computer (i.e. with a disabled Nvidia GPU) could be subject to this problem.
