If you use a filtered list such as "Applied Styles" or "Custom Styles" any time you want to remove a style you much change to All Styles, remove the style, then switch back to a filter. It gets tedious very quickly when you are forced to repeat the same sequence every time. In OpenOffice No Character Style was always on the list.
