While that is indeed the "high road" for indicating multiple classes applied to
the same element, in the related bug 115311 comment #27, you write:

> Nesting <span> Elements is valid ODF, LibreOffice can handle it

So, composition of character styles can also be achieved using nested spans. It
is an interesting question whether the UI for both of these should be the same
(and whether LO should break up nested spans so that each span sets all
properties; if not, then the UI should probably distinguish between the two
cases, which would be even more of a challenge.)
