If highlighting only covers the character (bounding) box and nothing outside of it, then - between consecutive, regularly-spaced lines, there must be some space between the highlighted regions, as otherwise, the bottom of one line could touch the top of the next one. So, one of two things is happening: 1. Highlighting also covers some spacing above the edge of the character box, or 2. The character box itself incorporates some space above all possible characters. which one do you think is the case?
