If the current language is set to DE-German, LO Writer always reverses the
spelling of “daß” to “dass” when the conjunction is written lowercase. In the
“new German spelling” this is correct. A “Daß” at the beginning of a compound
sentence must be written as “Dass” according to the new spelling. The fact that
this substitution is missing, is a mistake:
„Daß das so in der neuen Rechtschreibung richtig ist, wirst Du doch nicht
glauben.“
The conjunction with “ss” would be wrong in the old spelling rules (not
depending on case). Typing the conjunction “daß” in the old spelling is the
first test whether a spell check abides to old or to new orthography. (There
are lots of other differences).
In earlier versions, one could easily disable automatically replacing “daß” →
“dass” and so on. One had to delete e.g. the substitution rule in
Tools>AutoCorrect>AutocorrectOptions. and some variants of it for disordered
characters like “dßa”. Then one could use t“add to dictionary” for those words.
This prevented LO Writer from enforcing new spelling everywhere. The new German
orthography has different punctuation rules, which unfortunately impair, if not
prevent, the readability of some classical works. Fortunately, punctuation is
not corrected automatically by LO Writer!
There is no objection if LO Writer comes with the “new German spelling” by
default, if one can install the old spelling instead or alongside. But with the
mentioned version installing the extension from
https://extensions.libreoffice.org/en/extensions/show/german-de-de-1901-old-spelling-dictionaries,
LO Writer still automatically converted “daß” to “dass” if the current language
is German. Since the substitution already has taken place, it has become
impossible to add the old spelling to the dictionary, which I did for many
years:
What prevents the old spelling alone or alongside the new one in LO Writer? I
do not even see an extension for the new spelling.
In August 2019 there was a thread at
https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/aktivieren-von-alter-dt-rechtschreibung/44299/2
where they came across this deficiency. The first comment on the answer
mentions fiddling with standard files from the installation directory. But such
a thing (it is not discussed there in depth) should not be necessary: Language
or thesaurus options should be manageable with LO’s proper tools.
