OK, this has been an interesting 10 minutes

so Exporting as a string works fine with ""

but Importing from Microsoft Word docx an equation written as a^"*" returns in
Libreoffice {a}^{*} so the asterisk remains now, but becomes an operator again,
despite being written as a string. This means on an export to microsoft word
and a re-import it becomes a blank box.

I feel the initial post and title is an intended error and will mark as
resolved.
